Video Transcription: King Of The Hill Pro Model by Ground Force Sports What’s up, guys? I’m here with Rich from Ground Force Sports, the inventor of the King of the Hill, and he’s got a new model to show us. Rich, tell us about the difference. Rich: Yeah, it’s actually been out for a couple of months now. One of the things that pro teams—MLB teams—have been asking for is the cleat model. This model allows pitchers to use their cleats while pitching off the mound or in the bullpen. It all came about because major league teams wanted to use it on top of the mound, but their guys were wearing one turf shoe and one cleat on the front foot. So, what I did was add some durable material to the front. This stuff is sturdy and lasts a long time. This version has rubber on the front instead of the plastic we used on the turf model. You can see the difference here—you can put your foot right up on the front and drive off it, just like you would on a pitching mound. What is the King of the Hill? John: For those who might not know, what does the King of the Hill do? How does it help pitchers? Rich: Well, throughout the history of baseball, we’ve always had trouble getting kids to use their legs effectively. Using your legs is about creating force from the backside and bracing up the front side to make the hips turn. It’s as simple as that. But so many young players just rotate off the backside. They don’t get that initial or secondary force to create the chain reaction faster. This tool helps them with that. John: I’ve been using this for many years now—the original model. Rich: Yeah, you were one of the first ones I gave it to. John: And it was a lot different back then. It’s come a long way since then. Rich: Yeah, this new model is amazing. When I’m using it with my guys, they learn so quickly because they get instant audible feedback. When they hit the spring, it makes a noise, so they know whether or not they’re using their legs correctly. That feedback is huge. We’re such visual and auditory learners—not so much verbal. Once they hear that click, they can feel what it takes to make it happen, and they can duplicate it much easier than if I were just saying, “You gotta use your legs.” John: It definitely makes the coach’s job easier. Instead of trying to explain what you saw, the player can feel what they did, hear the sound, and make quick adjustments. Rich: Exactly. I can ask the player, “How did that feel?” and they’ll tell me. They know what they heard, and they can make small adjustments. The next rep is usually better. Within a couple of minutes, they’re seeing results with the drill. Who Can Use It? John: You don’t have to be an MLB pitcher to use this, right? It’s adjustable? Rich: Absolutely. I’ve had 8-year-olds on this. It’s not necessarily about increasing their intent to drive but more about creating directional force. Without this, it’s easier for kids to fly open or throw across their body. Teaching them the efficiency of driving straight down the line—or pretty close to it—is invaluable in our profession. We’ve got to get these kids into efficient movement patterns. The Pro Model John: So, you’re calling this one the Pro Model? Rich: Yeah, the Pro Cleat Model. But it’s not just for pros. Younger players can use it too. You can still adjust the spring like normal. The only difference is you can wear your spikes on this, and it’s going to last a lot longer. John: How many MLB teams are using this now? Rich: I was trying to count the other day, and I’m pretty sure it’s like 62 of them in the MLB. John: That’s crazy! Do you have all the teams yet? Rich: Not yet. I’ve still got about three left to go. The ones I’m having a hard time getting responses from. John: I’m sure they’ll love it once they try it. Rich: Oh, yeah. At the collegiate level, Vanderbilt built two of them permanently into their pitching mound. TCU has like four or five now. Florida State, Florida, UCLA, Arizona—they’ve all got them. John: Arizona State? Rich: I don’t think so. That’s your boy, right? John: Yeah, B. Higgs. Rich: Yeah, I’m calling him after this.
